HARBERT HALL

Herbert Hall is a ‘Traditional Method’ sparkling wine. It is handmade from low-yield chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier grown organically at the Marden Vineyard in Kent.

On release Herbert Hall was described by the leading wine writer Matthew Jukes as "the finest debut English Sparkling Wine I have ever tasted".

Restaurant listings include Bibendum, Chez Bruce, Christopher's, Le Gavroche, Scott's, Simpson's in the Strand and Wilton's. Herbert Hall is on Hamish Anderson's award-winning wine list at Tate Britain and is one of only three English sparkling wines stocked by Harrods.

The vinification is by the ‘traditional method’ of secondary fermentation in bottle. A small proportion of the wine is fermented in old oak barrels, adding roundness and complexity (but no oak flavour) to the final blend. Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia author, Tom Stevenson described the use of barrels at Harbert Hall as "Masterful".

Throughout the wine-making process they focus on preserving the integrity of the fruit. They tend to avoid 'malolactic fermentation', a bacterial process commonly used by producers to soften acidity more quickly (Krug being a notable exception).

The Marden Vineyard is regarded as one of the most exciting new vineyards in England.

Described by the authoritative Wines Behind the Label Guide (2009) as a "Prime Site"  it is planted on a unique parcel of land which has consistently produced the earliest and finest fruit on the estate since it was first farmed by Herbert Hall in the 19th Century.

The site is a South-facing 4-degree slope and forms part of the Marden Gravels. It basks in full English summer sun during the ripening period. The unforgiving soil is clay seamed with gravel which in dry periods sets hard as stone.

Herbert Hall Sparkling Wine is made in an artisan tradition that produces many of the finest and most individual English products. Their philosophy is rooted in the idea of terroir. They believe in wine as a true expression of the soil and weather in a specific location.

Just as a Savile Row suit expresses the quality and integrity of the craftsman, thet embrace artisan techniques to create a wine of great individuality.
