The noble title of Marqués de Vargas is held by a Rioja family that has been closely related to the wine industry since 1840, when Felipe de Mata, the eighth Marques de Vargas, planted the first vines in his Hacienda Prado lagar estate outside Logroño. Later, Hilario de la Mata was for many years the chairman and main shareholder of the historic Bodegas Franco Españolas. His son, Pelayo de la Mata, the current Marques de Vargas, realized his fathers dream by building a winery on the hacienda.

Since then, the winery has been self-sustained, like a Bordeaux château, with Javier Pérez Ruiz de Vergara as winemaker. The current Marqués is the chairman of the powerful drinks-distribution group Varma, which helped establish the new wines in the market.

THE VINEYARDS

The 65 ha (160 acres) planted to the traditional red varieties Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, and Garnacha produce three cuvées, all of them in the reserva category. “We treat our vineyards as though they were the most refined garden” Pelayo de la Mata. Each is planted on virus-free American base plant and protected from westerly winds.

The soil is a classic clay-limestone Rioja terroir, very poor in nutrients but giving fine-quality fruit. The vines are not irrigated, and organic viticultural practices are in place, so no pesticides or herbicides are used. Green-harvesting is applied if needed to keep yields in balance that is, between
28 and 35 hl/ha. The vine stocks are pampered year-round through different pruning processes and the removal of some grapes to improve the quality of the remaining grapes. With a production level restricted between 4.000 and 5.000 kg. per hectare in order to obtain fruits at their optimum level of acidity, tannic structure and alcohol degree, they exclusively make red Reserva wines.

THE WINERY

The winery Marqués de Vargas was built in 1989 on the Hacienda Pradolagar Estate in Logroño and was the first project of the Grupo Vinícola Marqués de Vargas. The winery, set in the middle of its own vineyards like a “chateâu”, is located in the heart of the Ebro Valley, in a region known as the “Three Marquis”. In this winery three premium single vineyard red wines are produced in limited production.

In the construction of the winery, thet didn´t spare any efforts in building a production plant equipped with the most modern technology and a cellar where the wines age in barrels and bottles, under the very best conditions.

The winery is technically sound, and it includes a large barrel room, since all the wines are aged in oak. Fine-grained American. French, and Russian
barrels are used. As the winemaker points out, “We only want those barrels whose growth rings show the greatest quantity of spring wood, which is excellent for the aging of wines meant for a long life.” Several toast levels are combined, with the aim of greater complexity. The wines are neither fined nor filtered and have indeed shown excellent ageworthiness.

The winery raised some eyebrows when it was announced that its top wine would be aged exclusively in new Russian oak a move apparently designed to give it a more original note and one that would set it apart from its competitors. But the intrinsic quality of Russian oak being what it is, this was a move that never fully convinced the critics. Nevertheless, the Russian oak barrels are still being used today.

The result is a collection of wines produced from a single vineyard, bottled with no treatments, clarifying, or filtering. Intense in color, strong in structure and with an interesting finish that the new wood adds, all of these wines are ideal for immediate consumption. They have, however, great potential for improvement in the bottle, and refinement of structure and aromas over time.
