Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza (Laguardia - Rioja Alavesa)

BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS PUJANZA (LAGUARDIA - RIOJA ALAVESA)

Carlos San Pedro and his family are one of the most known names in the Rioja Alavesa. There are 15th-century documents certifying the activities of the San Pedro family in the surroundings of Laguardia. In recent times, San Pedro’s family has follow several consecutive generations of vine growers and producers, starting with the great-grandfather Jenaro San Pedro, who planted Viña El Pison now managed for Artadi by his grandson Juan Carlos López de Lacalle. In addition several members of the family run winemaking companies in Laguardia, the splitting of the 80ha (200 acres) that the family father Javier San Pedro used to grow in the now extinct Bodegas San Pedro. Among those companies can count Bodegas Dios Ares (owned by Carlos San Pedro and his wife), Bodegas Las Orcas (owned by Carlos’s sister Cristina), and Bodegas Vallobera (run by Carlos’s brother Javier San Pedro).

Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza is an ambitious challenge adopted by Carlos when he was only 25 years old. But the vintage in which Carlos San Pedro and his team proved themselves was 2002. Not because they had, then, settled into their own brand-new facilities but because of the extraordinary results they managed to obtain from such a difficult year. 2002 Pujanza is an elegant and polished wine, fruit-driven, expressive, clean, good acidity, well integrated oak and lingering finish.

- Pujanza Hado 2010: Pujanza Hado Pujanza is the last wine the winery has made a wine of cheerful, young character, fresh and friendly on the palate. Made 100% Tempranillo from a selection of 2 of the 11 plots used to make his older brother, Pujanza. Vines with a maximum age of 35 years. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks with maceration on the skins for about 20 days. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels from five different coopers, combining with nearly new barrels.

This wine has a bright ruby red and violet colour. On the nose we find floral aromas, red fruits (strawberries, raspberries and cherries), dairy (cheese, cream and yogurt) and light toasted wood. On the palate is very pleasant and easy to drink, fruity flavours, good acidity, with light tannins. An ideal wine to pair with almost any dish including fish, white and red meats.

Approximate price: 10 €

- Pujanza 2008: Pujanza is the higher-production wine, the one with which Carlos San Pedro introduced himself in 2001 with the 1998 vintage. It comes mostly from a vineyard called Valdepoleo or La Viña Grande, which consists roughly of 15 ha (37 acres) of mostly Tempranillo planted on clay-limestone soils at about 630m (2,070ft) above sea level. Pujanza is normally a varietal Tempranillo, though in warmer years, like 1998 and 2003, it takes a little Graciano from a 1.5 ha (3.7-acre) plot that is planted in the same Valdepoleo vineyard.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks of 15,000 litters. With daily pumping over. After the alcoholic fermentation, the maceration took place with the skins. Then the malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels, and the rest was in the tanks. After the fermentation, the wine remained in barrels for 13 months. Then after a period of resting, the proceeded to bottle the wine. Remained in bottled for 14 months before its release.

This wine has a medium intensity cherry red colour. On the nose we find pleasant aromas of well matured red fruits; reminiscences of dairy products, milk, cream; interesting balsamic aromas and very fine touches of toasted French oak. In the mouth we find a tasty wine, balanced, fruit driven, subtly harmonized with sweet and gentle tannins from the wood.

Approximate price: 15 €

- Pujanza Norte 2009: It comes from a vineyard on chalky-limestone soil called El Gancho or El Norte, with 2.7 ha (6.7 acres), mostly Tempranillo, at 680m (2,230ft), which comes close to the highest altitude of any quality vineyard in Rioja Alavesa. This is not a varietal wine, though Tempranillo is always predominant (and increasingly so, from the original 60%, up to 85% in 2004). Also include up to 5% of scattered white grape Viura vines, following traditional practices not exclusive to Rioja.

This wine has a dark purple cherry colour. On the nose the wine has many aromatic nuances and layers: smoky, ebony wood, spices, pepper, cloves, balsam, eucalyptus, menthol, fennel and black fruits. The aroma opens in the glass showing much more subtle, and interesting. This wine is made to enjoy with a good and big glass of wine where the aromas can move freely. On the palate the wine has good structure, balance, finesse and complexity. You could say that we are drinking a fine work of art and not just a glass of wine.

Approximate price: 40 €

- Pujanza Cisma 2007: It has a very limited production; because it is made with 100% Tempranillo from a small vineyard (0.8 acres) planted in 1925. It's a very old vineyard with a very small production and located at 600 meters over the see level. The winemaking in made in tanks of French oak and destemmed grapes. Over 30 days of maceration with the skins and malolactic fermentation in the same tanks. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels from Allier and Tronçais and rest in the bottle for a few months before release.

The wine has a dark cherry colour, with purple glints. On the nose find intense aromas of red fruit, cream, and balsamic subtle herbal notes. On the palate it is wide, intense, high structured, but also round and tasty. Ripe tannins, good acidity that is well integrated. I guess that is a wine to drink now but with a great aging potential.
