Rioja Wine Urbina Gran Reserva 1996

The wine has a light cherry colour with an orange rim. On the nose is complex, showing aromas of fruit jam (figs, apricots, plums) and very soft toasty hints from the oak. On the palate we find a slight sweetness sensation, and a refreshing acidity, well-balanced oak, with very round tannins. It has a lingering finish that is dominated by fruity sensations, and spicy notes. This wine has a nice structure, great finesse, velvet smoothness, and good deal of complexity, ready to drink now.

Bodegas Urbina made this wine with 95% Tempranillo and smaller proportions of Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo 5%. The grapes are obtained from vines with more than thirty years of age settled in calcareous clay and alluvial soils in the village of "Cuzcurrita de Rio Tirón" the most north-western part of the Rioja Alta. The grapes are handpicked and the fermentation is in stainless steel tanks for a better temperature control and fruit health. Then the wine is aged for twenty-four months in barrels of French and American oak.

This Single Estate is situated in Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, on the north-western edge of DOC Rioja. It is an area that produces wines with a great capacity for ageing, and is therefore excellent for the production of great wines - Reservas and Gran Reservas.

Bodegas Benito Urbina, a family-owned, Single Estate winery, has 75 hectares of vineyards, 65 of Tempranillo, and 10 of Graciano, Mazuelo and Viura. Total production is about 400,000 bottles of Red Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva and 50,000 bottles of White and Rosé. Four generations of the family have dedicated themselves to the cultivation of their vineyards and the production of wine. In 1975 the bodega began to age and bottle their own wine in order to retain the special characteristics of a small single Estate. Their sole objective, the production of quality wines, has been achieved as the result of careful viticulture using traditional techniques, harvesting by hand and avoiding the use of weed killers and pesticides. The vines are grown in bush form and some are trained by cordon, with controlled yields not exceeding 4500 kilos/ha.There has been a large investment in modern installations, stainless steel fermentation tanks and a bottling plant. Harvesting by the Urbina staff and family ensures the maximum quality of grapes. We are the sole UK agents for Bodegas Benito Urbina.
