Tahon de Tobelos Reserva 2008, La Rioja, Spain

- Wine making: 100% Tempranillo, manually harvested, average 50-year-old vines from one vineyard located between the villages of Brinas and San Vicente on the plots of La Linde, Hombon and La Tejera. 100% destemming, 9 day fermentation with twice daily pumping over and a total 22 day maceration period with grape skins. Aged 13 months in a rigorous selection of new French, American and Hungarian oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. Then bottled and aged for a minimum of 16 months before release. Production: 32,000 bottles. This wine is also available in Magnums (6x150cl).

- Tasting notes: "Dark, garnet red cherry with youthful glints. Superbly intense open nose, aromas of toasted oak and wild berries with balsamic and mineral tones. Huge wine of enormous depth and structure with great elegance, soft and rounded, complex fruit character of blackberries, plums, damsons with refined, integrated oak, toasted cocoa and vanilla flavours, broadening out on palate and leaving a wonderous finish.  Excellent with game, red meats, baked fish and semi-cured cheeses". burridgewine

- Winery: Bodegas y Viñedos Tobelos, founded in 1999, is situated in the municipality of Brinas. This project came to fruition through the ambition of one man, Ricardo Reinoso, the initiator and present development director of this exciting venture. The winery, designed architecturally in a uniquely modern and minimalist style, is set into the hillside that runs down to the Río Ebro, adapting itself to the terrain but breaking away from the classic style of a winery building. The bodega, which borders the boundary of the municipality of Haro separated only by a pathway, is perched on the top of a steep slope with breathtaking views of the vineyards and a promontory of the River Ebro. It is the first bodega you arrive at on entering the denominación of Rioja from the north. Close by you can find other bodegas like Roda, Muga, Tondonia, Rioja Alta and Cune. Brinas is the doorway to La Rioja, a small village of stone buildings with heraldic portals. A truly magical and peaceful place. So we are dealing with a bodega positioned in a magnificent setting in the heart of the very best Rioja Tempranillo vineyards. There are 3 hectares of vineyards adjacent to the bodega and another 15 hectares, directly under their control, belonging to partners of the bodega. The winery was completed in 2003 and the 2002 vintage was the first to be elaborated in the new winery. Total production today stands at just over 200,000 bottles of mainly Crianza wines but also a Reserva and a new, recently released barrel-fermented White. There are a total of 975 American, French and Central European oak barrels which are rotated every 4 to 5 years. After careful grape selection in 25 kilo boxes, production is achieved with the minimum use of pumps to circulate the must in special “troncocónico” (conical-shaped) auto self-emptying, stainless steel tanks with a capacity of 25,000 litres each, with automatic remontage, designed to facilitate the breaking of the hat to allow better colour extraction. The style of the Tobelos wines is positioned midway between the classical Rioja and the modern concept.
